Eye Candy
The beginnings of a craving usually start with the eyes. Along with the sense of smell, the sense of sight strongly influences the choices we make in terms of food. In a highly visual age, where information is fast and furious, attention spans are much shorter with people demanding the most information in the shortest amount of time. Under these conditions, visual appeal can make the difference in the way business is run.
While the advent of affordable digital cameras has virtually made a photographer out of everyone, the skills to taking good pictures isn’t always innate nor learned. Whether for a menu, a flier, a magazine feature or a blog, food photography is very much in demand. Alongside this demand is the growing interest in food styling. These two skill sets, food styling and food photography, are almost integral to each other and for this issue of World Food Exchange, we focus on the husband and wife tandem of Mark and Linda Floro, each a renowned expert in their respective fields and together, a formidable team.
As food photography is able to bring in diners, the visuals of food presentation are just as important. Proper plating of food should be enticing to the diner while poor plating could make the food immediately unappetizing. Buffets require an entirely different creativity. As with our coverage of Manila Hotel’s newly renovated Ilang Ilang Restaurant, it is clear that the art of buffet spreads can influence the choices diners make.
We at World Food Exchange continue to strive to be true to our being a trade publication for the food and beverage industry. As we tackle features that are not always covered by other consumer publications, we also would like to be able to hear from you on what other topics or stories would be of interest to you. We hope to provide our readers relevant information from which they can learn and encourage them to uplift their skills, to be innovative, to be entrepreneurs.
Hope to hear from you and happy reading.
